When one thinks of all the great performers of soul and rhythm & blues music, one doesn’t usually associate it with a young man from Northern Ontario – until they meet Andre Bisson. The award winning composer, arranger, guitar player and vocalist is one of the hardest working musicians around. Soulful, talented and sharp Bisson was clearly born with a passion for music and performing, as well as the smarts and talent to pull it all together and build a large following in Southern Ontario and beyond.
Andre Bisson spent a large part of his formative years performing in bars and festivals in his home town prior to relocating to Hamilton to study at the acclaimed Applied Music Program at Mohawk College. It was here that Bisson, with his raspy and soulful voice, formed popular bands that would perform classic Rhythm & Blues and originals with his band.
Since their formation, the Andre Bisson Band have been entertaining audiences across Canada, US, and Europe. Their first overseas tour in the summer of 2012 was by and large a success that saw the band performing at festivals including Bentworth Blues Festival, in England, Sunflowerfest in Northern Ireland, Blues Dragon in Cardiff, Wales and others, resulting in invitations to return to perform at future festivals and club dates.
One reviewer in attendance at the Harvest Time Blues Festival in Monaghan, Ireland had this to say: “A refreshingly, alternative musical experience was provided by the Canadian group Andre Bisson Band. A combination of clever arrangements, tasteful guitar work, and exceptionally talented saxophone and trumpet players, contributed to a jazz, pop, and soul fusion sound which the audience loved.” (Dave Scott – Blues Revue Magazine)
Bisson has been recognized in the blues community for his four studio album releases, gaining exposure through a number of positive reviews, and extensive radio airplay. Andre’s first CD Rhythm & Blues Experience was nominated for Blues Recording of the Year at the 2009-2015 Hamilton Music Awards, Voted Best Rhythm & Blues Album of 2009 by Blues Underground Network, and Voted Best CD by the Hamilton Blues Lovers. Two subsequent releases Till the Real Thing Comes Along and Bad Scene further cemented Bisson’s place as a master in the rhythm and blues music scene. Most recently, Bisson was nominated for Blues Recording of the Year and Instrumental Recording of the Year for the 2015 Hamilton Music Awards, was nominated for Overseas Artist of the Year at the British Blues Awards and Won Male Vocalist of the Year for the 2015 Hamilton Blues Awards.
With the completion of his sixth studio album Left With the Blues recorded at Hamilton’s Boxcar Sound Recording Studio and released in September 2015, it is clear to hear that Andre has stayed true to his influences. Combining the driving bass lines of Motown, the raw vocal power of Stax, and the electrifying horn sections, this album is sure to bring any blues fan to their feet. Along with 9 new originals, Bisson pays tribute to one of the greats with his version of “Crosscut Saw”, for discerning blues fans and those who like to dance their cares away.
André had the honour to play before Jimmie Vaughan & Robben Ford at their concerts here in Hamilton at Mohawk College the last couple of years and this summer Colin James & Steve Strongman.
Bisson continues to tour in Canada, US and Europe and will be competing in the 2017 International Blues Challenge representing the Grand River Blues Society. He was also nomianted “New Artist of the Year” by the Maple Blues Awards for 2017. Andre is working on some great new projects and plans for future tours to be released in the new year.
Always a consummate performer, Andre Bisson provides a refreshing, fun and enjoyable experience for music lovers.
“Left With The Blues veers from soulful ballads to jumpy blues numbers that ignite sparks like metal on flint. This is a robust blues album that leaves an impression.” Invisible Ink
“Packed with enough soul and energy to fill a couple of albums, Andre and his big band will satisfy all your musical cravings”. – Hamilton Blues
This Hamilton-based band’s horn-based retro soul moves markedly forward with an
all-original program by Bisson, the bandleader, vocalist and guitar player and sometime piano player.
One listen, though, will tell you that he has a fine group of willing accomplices on board.
Add in a couple of guests and you can transport yourself right back to the Club Bluenote.
“Bad Scene” serves up a slab of funk for the opener. “Wasting Time” & “Timeless Love”
keep the groove going with gorgeous melodies, something Bisson excels at.
